Youblisher is a website; the MacBook is the best place to create the book. You can read it on both devices. It does require email verification; therefore, at SMS the teacher would have to create the account and create a class book. Youblisher only accepts PDF files. Large files can take a bit of time to process.
Flipsnack works well on the iPad. Flipsnack also requires email activation. There is an educational version (FlipSnack Edu) in which you can create student accounts; however, the free version is limited to ten students. Flipsnack is much more customizable than youblisher.
